Dear Vance Members and Wheeling Community,
Sunday, September 9th has been designated "Homecoming Sunday." It is a call to renew our commitment to be a part of the Vance Church family. Some have been away for the summer. Some longer. Some look forward to beginning a new church year by reaffirming the importance of a spiritual home.
For those who prefer the informality of contemporary worship, please come to the 9 a.m. service. For those who prefer traditional worship, the 11 a.m. service awaits you.
We live in very challenging times. As was evidence in the Steubenville Logo controversy, there are many seeking to remove any vestiges of religion from public life. Today many desire to be spiritual without being active in a local church, having been turned off by bad religion and what they have experienced in troubles churches.
In such times, it is appropriate to issue the call: Come Home. Come to the place where we hear the gospel of a love that conquers all and a forgiveness that covers all our sins. Come home to the community that is challenged to become by God's grace, a community of reconciliation. Come home to the place where God is present to make us a "new creation in Christ."
On the 9th we will celebrate the Sac rament of Holy Communion. At the 11 a.m. traditional service we will have as special musical guests: Nathan Strasser and Bob Thompson. The Vance choir also returns.
Also on the 9th we begin registrations for Sunday School for all ages. Also at 10 a.m. in the Merriman Chapel we will begin a series of discussions about the following topics to which all are invited, especially all church officers:
9th -- Anxiety and the Future
16th -- Transitions to New Life
23rd -- The Six C's that Make (or break) a Church
On Tuesday, September 11th, we are having a blood drive at the church. Our goal is one hundred units for the Red Cross. Please consider helping us meet this goal and giving this precious gift of life to our community.
Dome home. Come to where all are challenged by God to forgive the past, to be reconciled to each other, to celebrate the new life we are called to live by grace in Jesus Christ.
Hope to see you on the 9th.
